For 10-hard-luck Texans, a new lease on life is so close they can touch it.  Under a scorching sun for days on end, armed with nothing but hope, humor and ambition, they'll fight to keep at least one hand on a brand-new truck in order to win it.  In the hilarious, hard-fought contest that is Hands on a Hardbody, only one winner can drive away with the American Dream.

Romantic entanglements, mistaken identity, cross-dressing, and duels in the dark - sound familiar?  But this delirious farce was written by a nun... in the 17th Century!  Once of the few plays of the era to be written by a woman, House of Desires tells the hilarious story of a scheming brother and sister who are entangled in a complicated web of love with four others, all hiding away under one roof.  Strict rules of honor and propriety mean that they are not allowed to be alone with one another, so, with the help of a few wily servants, mayhem ensues as all six lovers struggle to steal moments with each other, and we try to work out who really loves whom.

The time is 1905, the place is New York City, where Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes.  Her skills and discretion are much in demand, and she has managed to stuff a goodly sum of money into her quilt over the years.  One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and future.  Her plan is to find the right man and use the money she's saved to open a beauty parlor where black women will be treated as royally as the white women she sews for.  But when she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal she begins to dream of her own trousseau.

THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD

A Musical by Rupert Holmes

April 4-6, 8-10, 2019 at 7:30 PM
Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 3:00 PM
Sawyer Theatre
1st Floor, VSU Fine Arts Building

Based on Charles Dickens' final unfinished novel, this hilarious whodunit invites the audience to solve its mystery by choosing the identity of the murderer.  The tale is presented as a show within a show, as the Music Hall Royale - a delightfully loony Victorian theatre company - presents Dickens' brooding mystery.  Songs from the musical include "Perfect Strangers," "Don't Quit While You're Ahead," and "Moonfall."
