About this field

Dancers use movement to tell stories, express themselves, provide entertainment and inspire others. There are numerous styles of dance, including ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance. The Valdosta State University dance program, one of only a handful of colleges in the state to offer a major in the field, fosters excellence in these areas of dance and prepares students to succeed as professional artists.

The Valdosta State Difference

Students are accepted into the Valdosta State dance program by audition. Classes are small, with an average of 15 students per class, and students enjoy a close-knit relationship with faculty. Dance students collaborate in several productions with the Valdosta State theatre department and have the opportunity to become involved with the Peach State Summer Theatre, a nine-week summer program that takes place on campus each summer. In addition to study abroad trips to Europe, the department regularly sponsors trips to New York and Los Angeles to visit companies and network with alumni. Students can gain practical experience on campus by working in box office assistantships. Student organizations geared toward dance majors include the VSU Repertory Dance Club and the VSU Ballroom Dance Club.
