Minor in Aerospace Studies
- Total Credit Hours: 16

About this field
The Department of Aerospace Studies is the United States Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) detachment at VSU. Students seeking a commission into the active duty Air Force will take classes aimed at developing leadership, fostering teamwork, military history, and understanding the role of the US Air Force in national defense. The academic portion of AFROTC is also open to students who wish to only take the academic component without pursuing a commission.
The Valdosta State Difference
The Department of Aerospace Studies at Valdosta State University offers one of three AFROTC programs in the state of Georgia. Despite being classified as a medium sized school, the size of the cadet corps at VSU rivals that of our larger sister programs at Georgia Tech and UGA. Also, due to the support of VSU’s campus community and the university’s proximity to Moody AFB, the AFROTC program at VSU offers unparalleled access to college educators and active duty Air Force officers.
What You'll Learn
Students that participate in AFROTC will learn about the foundations of the US Air Force, military history focusing on the evolution of air and space power, leadership, national security affairs, preparation for active duty, and experience a hands-on learning environment centered on leadership and problem solving.
Cost and Length of Program
The program is designed around a four year college career, but can be completed in less time in certain circumstances. All materials, to include books and uniforms, are free to students participating in the program.
Admissions Requirements
- Freshman: Students academically accepted to the university can participate in AFROTC by registering for the aerospace studies classes.
- Sophomores/Transfers: Contact the Department of Aerospace Studies for Requirements
Internships
Air Force ROTC offers many opportunities for professional development in the summers between semesters. The program has sent students to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to learn soaring (non-powered flight), survival training, and free-fall parachuting. Also, cadets in AFROTC were sent to various USAF bases across the nation to shadow currently serving active duty Air Force officers.
